september 2017 update approvals and declines we want to support you to submit the best grant application you can, so you have the greatest chance to have your learning and development supported by macmillan. we currently decline 26% of applications, and we need your help in reducing the number of declines. the main reasons we decline applications are: the learning is considered a core or mandatory requirement of your role, and therefore the responsibility of your employer, or is not something macmillan currently supports. some examples of courses we are likely to decline are: non-medical prescribing clinical supervision pip update/legal updates/social security benefit system updates core clinical skills courses hr type courses mandatory courses the level of course/qualification is too large a jump and/or not commensurate with the role. licence purchase if there is a competency based sign off required by anyone in your employing organisation/external we would decline it prince courses the learning outcomes on your application are not detailed enough. in some cases, applications have only one or two sentences in the learning outcomes section, which make it difficult to understand the impact of the learning. some examples from declined applications are: ‘be able to identify better communication with patients at end of life’, and ‘following on from the workshop patients can be provided with the appropriate care’. the activity metrics section does not provide enough detail on how the outcomes will be measured. some examples are: ‘reflection of case studies and peer feedback’ and ‘we will ask everyone to complete an evaluation of the day and make sure that what is learnt is put into practice.’ the evidence attached does not meet the grants policy requirements. some examples are: attaching a document you have written yourself with course costs; attaching a prospectus from a university covering their whole programme, rather than just the details of the specific course; and attaching a document with hyperlinks to the evidence needed. top tips contact your macmillan learning and development manager first if you are unsure whether the course you wish to apply for would be considered mandatory or the responsibility of your employer. provide plenty of detail on the learning outcomes you are looking to achieve so the assessor fully understands the changes you are looking to make as a result of the learning you wish to undertake. you need to write a minimum of 50 words in each box. an example is: ‘i feel my increased understanding of the treatment and management of head and neck cancer will significantly benefit both the verbal and written information i give to patients. for example, we hold multi-disciplinary ahp pre, post and on-treatment clinics providing support and information to patients and their relatives. following this course, i would like to look at the written information we provide and the different modalities of providing information to patients throughout their journey, especially with regards to swallowing and communication difficulties and information for our laryngectomy patients.’ provide enough detail on your activity metrics, and ensure they can be measured, and explain how you will do this. again, you need to write a minimum of 50 words. an example is: ‘i will measure the changes and improvements i will have made following the completion of the course by the benefit the patients will have had from the new medications i have learnt about. the patients i see have a patient satisfaction questionnaire, the results of this will show if patient's care has benefited from the course. i will also measure the improvements i have made from seeing other staff using medications i have learnt about whilst on the course. after delivering teaching related to my new learning i will give the staff on courses i deliver questionnaires to assess the benefit of what i have learnt and have then shared with fellow colleagues. i will measure these by other staff/colleagues having the confidence to use new medications they were previously unfamiliar with’. ensure the evidence you attach meets the requirements specified in the grants policy. all the documents must be in word or pdf format, and must be official documents from the provider(s) you wish to use. l&d grants policy you must have been in your macmillan role for at least 3 months and have attended your macmillan induction day before you submit a grant application if you are in an adopted macmillan post, the 3 month period will only start once your employer has completed the adoption process, as you are not officially adopted until this is done for group grant applications, travel, accommodation and other expenses for facilitators should be based on the limits given in the new expenses policy the grant evaluation process is now live, so you may need to complete an evaluation of a previous application before submitted a new one expenses policy you must ask your employer in the first instance to cover your expenses, before making any claim the maximum amount you may claim towards travel for an activity you undertake that meets the policy requirements is £250 open travel tickets are usually the most expensive, and should not be used without prior agreement application support we have improved the online support available to help you complete your application. if you have any questions about the application process, please try the online support in the first instance. if you can’t find the answer you need, please contact us using the support function. policy introduction and types of grant macmillan recognises the importance of supporting the learning and development of both macmillan professionals and the wider cancer workforce with the aim of improving the lives of people affected by cancer. the provision of l&d grants is one of the ways we promote access to learning, in addition to the provision of courses, e-learning and coaching. the grants programme has been designed to enable you to access programmes that macmillan does not provide directly that will enhance your professional, service and career development. please note that grants may not be used for learning which is a mandatory, legal or core requirement of your role. it is your employer’s responsibility to provide this. for example, clinical supervision cannot be provided through a l&d grant. all grants are funded solely by charitable donations. please ensure your application represents effective and efficient use of these funds. if you are unsure whether the learning you wish to apply for is mandatory or a core requirement, please speak to your local macmillan learning and development team before you apply. macmillan provides two grants for professionals with the aim of improving the lives of people affected by cancer. individual grants to enable macmillan professionals to access learning opportunities to support professional development in their role and their career progression. this grant can be used to pay for conferences and courses. group grants to provide bespoke learning for a group or team of cancer care professionals. only the applicant needs to be a macmillan professional. the grant can be used to cover the costs of facilitators and accommodation/catering for the programme. this grant cannot be used by a team to attend conferences and courses provided externally. this policy outlines the criteria and application process for each grant, and provides all the information you need to complete your application. we strongly recommend that yo
